Adjustable and reversible weight loss surgery
A soft silicone band is placed around the top of the stomach, creating a small pouch. Saline is injected through a port to tighten or loosen the band, controlling restriction.
Suitable for patients with BMI 35+ who want a reversible surgical option. Less suitable for patients who eat high-calorie liquids or "soft" foods that pass easily through the band.
Weight loss is slower than sleeve or bypass, with most patients losing 40–50% of excess weight over 2–3 years. Success depends significantly on patient compliance and follow-up.
The fastest recovery of all bariatric surgeries. Most patients return to work within 1–2 weeks. The band is adjusted at follow-up appointments every 4–6 weeks initially.
The band can be tightened (by adding saline) to increase restriction, or loosened (by removing saline) if restriction is too great. This is done via the port under local anaesthetic.
The gastric band can be completely removed laparoscopically if needed. The stomach returns to near-normal function after removal.
